Questions for Hot Topics #3 came from Rhonda and Om Chitale:
The discussion focused a lot of time and attention on the school to prison pipeline and the juvenile justice system. There was also attempt at understanding the argument from parents who want safety in schools and who think police/SSO's are the ones who should provide that safety. In the Education Pioneers Unplugged kick off event for our Bay Area Summer 2017 Cohort, Marc Mares and his group of volunteers gathered at Oakland International High School—a school that serves recently arrived immigrants—to meet and engage students. As part of their event, they handed out donated baked goods with the aim of not only offering them nourishment to start their day but more importantly to show them support. In a dialogue Marc and his group were able to have with an alum and two current students, courage and strength emerged as two common attributes of these students. Courage and strength are particularly important for these students who, as immigrants, felt targeted by rhetoric used during and after the presidential election. This is why one key intention of this event was for EP fellows to simply show a gesture of support to the students off OIHS. Other highlights included EP Fellows gaining first hand exposure to different learning environments, student populations, and the challenges school leadership encounter in the process. When asked about any additional takeaways from the event, one participant noted, “I forgot how difficult it is to engage high school students, especially when you’re seen as just some ‘old guy’ to these kids.” We encourage you to get involved and learn more about volunteer opportunities at Oakland International High School, please visit the website at https://www.oaklandinternational.org/volunteer. |
